Music in My Family

When getting assigned this blog I knew I had a lot of options to chose from in my family, from my Dad who has been listening to classic rock for 40 some years to my cousin who goes to punk rock concerts almost every month, when it came down to who to call to interview though, I had to go with my Mom. My first questions were all just some general questions about her thoughts on music currently and when she listens today. In her day to day she doesn't listen to music much besides at work where they have music going on the whole time in the background to drown out the sound of all the dental equipment (she is a dentist). The biggest take away from my general questions was her current favorite genre and song, currently she is big on Pop music especially Ed Sheeran - Shivers, I loved hearing this because it shows a big contrast to what she listened to and liked when she was younger.

The most interesting part of the whole interview was when it came to the questions about music when she was young and her experiences with it. When she was in high school all her exposure to music was from the people around her and the biggest thing at the time was Classic Rock. Her very first music player was a handheld cassette deck with the album "Back in Black" by AC/DC which is also the name of her favorite song back in the day "Back in Black" by AC/DC. She loved rock and would go to concerts with friends all the time, it was how people connected back in the day.

The last thing that was super popular when she was late in high school and starting college was Michael Jackson and his rise in popularity. She says she can still remember people waiting in line at the release of "Thriller" to grab his album on vinyl and CD. To this day she says he is the most influential solo artist of her time and in my personal opinion, it isn't even close. She said that what Michael Jackson did in their time will never happen again and he was a special kind of artist in his music, his vocals were the best around with the catchiest beats that you heard everywhere. Her favorite song by Michael Jackson is "Billie Jean" and I'd have to say that's my favorite as well, such an amazing vocal performance.
