Grant's Favorite Music From Overseas

Image
Most of my favorite music artists and what I primarily listen to are all from America so I had to look around to find other things that I liked for this blog but I think I landed on some music that I really enjoy. Two of the songs I knew from the start I would put on this list because they are my favorite non-American songs but outside of that the other two are new to me as well. My first recommendation and my personal favorite is "Luv(sic) pt2" by Nujabes. This is my modern song and I cannot praise Nujabes enough for this song and the project it comes from. The song itself is a beautiful old school rap production by Nujabes and on top of it are amazing vocals by Shing02, the song itself is a beautiful story about enjoying life and others and the production replicates that vibe perfectly. Some background on Nujabe,s he is a Japanese producer who died in 2010 who influenced the Japanese hip-hop scene and is a founder of the atmospheric jazzy sampling that can be scene in moder...

Music in Rituals in My Life

Image
I don't have a lot of experience with music and rituals that I remember. I don't remember the music at my Baptism or my First Communion and neither does my Mom. We talked about it and think it just went with the particular Sunday in the time in the Church calendar. There have not been any weddings in my family since I have been old enough to remember. There was not memorable music at my high school graduation. There was only background music as we walked in and it wasn't traditional entrance song. My Confirmation and 8th grade graduation ceremony were very abbreviated and not traditional as they both happened during peak Covid time.  My Grandma was the biggest music person in the family. She wasn't a musician, but she loved to listen to music and sing along. Christmas and holiday music was probably her favorite. One of her absolute favorites to sing along to that is just a silly song is "Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer" by Elmo and Patsy.  If you listen to...

Music in My Family

When getting assigned this blog I knew I had a lot of options to chose from in my family, from my Dad who has been listening to classic rock for 40 some years to my cousin who goes to punk rock concerts almost every month, when it came down to who to call to interview though, I had to go with my Mom. My first questions were all just some general questions about her thoughts on music currently and when she listens today. In her day to day she doesn't listen to music much besides at work where they have music going on the whole time in the background to drown out the sound of all the dental equipment (she is a dentist). The biggest take away from my general questions was her current favorite genre and song, currently she is big on Pop music especially Ed Sheeran - Shivers, I loved hearing this because it shows a big contrast to what she listened to and liked when she was younger.  The most interesting part of the whole interview was when it came to the questions about music whe...

Grant Music and Gender

Image
I have only ever experienced music as a listener. During middle school for our music class in 4th grade I played the recorder like everyone else and while I played you couldn't tell if there was an animal dying or me playing. As a listener and appreciator of music though I have an ear for good music, and there is no gender difference in how well people can express themselves in music.  Starting off in a field I know a lot about, R&B. "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill" is one of my favorite R&B albums of all time and the music itself is beautiful, full of energy, and is a timeless classic. What is more important about the album though, story behind the album itself and Lauryn Hill as an artist. What you need to know about Lauryn Hill first is that she first started singing and songwriting for a group called "Fugees" when she was 17 and released her debut solo album "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill" at the age of 23. For today's standards wha...

My Music and Me

Hello, Im Grant Robertson, I just moved to Converse from my home in Michigan and this is my first time being in South Carolina and living in the south. Im originally from Detroit, Michigan and got exposed to music in general from my father that would always play Kid Rock and AC/DC in on the car radio on the way to school. I originally went to a high school in downtown Detroit but moved to a Spire Academy, a boarding school in Ohio my senior year on esports scholarship to further my career and improve myself and a person and competitor.   The music I've had on repeat the past month has been cut even between an artist I just recently found and fell in love with his work and an artist I've known about and followed for a while but just released a new project. The first artist is a HipHop artist named Smino whose music is an amazing blend of R&B and HipHop with Neo-Soul aspects which he flows together beautifully with his own voice that is blended excellently with his ama...
